Reflective Journal Week 8

From this unit, I learned a lot about the goals and future of nursing.  Lots of these were some things that I was already feeling and noticing, so it was interesting to see that other nurses have similar feelings.  I also learned that there are lots of group goals for nursing such as continuing education, and ensuring nurses have bachelors degrees or even masters/doctorate degrees.
I thought it was interesting to learn the perspectives of my fellow classmates were also interesting.  I agreed with them on the discussions about the future of nursing and impacts.  I learned some new things from them such as seeing the progress of the nursing report over the last 10 years and seeing where it will go in the next few years. It's cool to see goals that are being standardized and accomplished.
I will utilize this information in my nursing practice by setting future education goals and making sure that I follow through with them.  I think that shadowing will help as well because it can help me determine what my interests are and what I would like to do in the future.  I also can become more involved with bringing up concerns and issues to management and helping push for nurses to be able to practice to their full extent.
My personal feelings on the matter pertain to the practice of APRNs.  Although the routes of physicians and APRNs are different, I think that while physicians are medical experts, APRNs have that bedside experience and have hospital knowledge that the physicians don't necessarily have to the same degree.  I think that the use of APRNs in all states with the ability to practice independently could help save a lot of money as well.
