Reflective Journal 12

In this unit, I learned a lot about methods and strategies for hospital business.  I explored strategy behind placement of healthcare facilities and why that is important.  I also learned a great deal about planning and committees as well. The team activities were extremely interesting. I liked seeing how the other team thought in the game we played.  I also liked coming up with responses with the Exam.  I liked discussing with my group on the different approaches we would take.  For the question about the male with HIV, I agreed with my teammates in the need to ask him about his reservations behind telling his partner. I will utilize this information in my nursing practice when I have opportunities for leadership, as well as if I am ever a part of a committee that discusses placement of hospitals/healthcare facilities, or some sort of administration role.  I think it is valuable because I will be able to have a better understanding and be able to contrib...

Reflective Journal Week 10

1. From this unit, I learned a bit more about how I respond to change.  I also learned methods for managing change.  In Sean's lecture, I thought about the importance of not being afraid to implement change in an environment.  I think people need to know the seriousness from day one and set those expectations.  2. I felt like most team members either related to the mice or Haw during the group activity.  Initially, I felt like Haw, but I remembered that I am a huge planner.  Reading my classmates's responses made me think about how I usually am preparing and bracing for change.  I just get the most frustrated when it's something that I feel like I can't plan for. 3. In my nursing practice, I will apply what I learned by learning more about why changes are taking place.  I also want to have a better attitude and try to have a better understanding about why certain changes take place.  I think that it would be important to weigh all the optio...

Reflective Journal Week 9

In this unit, I learned a lot about staffing and career exploration.  I've been thinking about the future of my career for years now because I don't honestly want to be a bedside nurse forever.  Learning that there are so many options and ways to determine that is super important.  Also, figuring out the process in which I can do that. I've learned a lot how staffing works on the units too.  I think we've all had moments when we get frustrated with a staffing assignment.  I realize more and more that it's a difficult job.  It depends lots on patients and anticipated patients, as well as the acuity of the patients in the hospital.  There are so many factors that depend on good staffing.  I felt like the team activities were super interesting.  I agreed overall with what we all came up with, but I did realize that staffing is kind of tedious. It was an interesting learning opportunity. I will utilize this information when determining the futu...

Budgeting Interview

The leader I interviewed has had a variety of experience with budgeting, including a multi-business company called financially fit. I talked with a leader who tracks the budget monthly. He said that weekly isn't a big enough sample size and quarterly is too long. They get monthly statements showing how they are doing compared to their budget. For the entire company, he oversees m ultiple departments. Labor is always their biggest expense and when they need to cut costs, i nventory gets cut on some items, employee travel expenses or sometimes they cut employee education. They try to avoid cutting labor, because once it is cut, it is really hard to get it back even if you can justify it. Typically he is am told that he needs to make a cut and it is up to him to decide where best to cut it instead of a whole team consulting. He will usually consult his team and a financial analyst before making a final decision on what to cut. When asked if he is under budget one year, does th...

Reflective Journal Week 8

From this unit, I learned a lot about the goals and future of nursing.  Lots of these were some things that I was already feeling and noticing, so it was interesting to see that other nurses have similar feelings.  I also learned that there are lots of group goals for nursing such as continuing education, and ensuring nurses have bachelors degrees or even masters/doctorate degrees. I thought it was interesting to learn the perspectives of my fellow classmates were also interesting.  I agreed with them on the discussions about the future of nursing and impacts.  I learned some new things from them such as seeing the progress of the nursing report over the last 10 years and seeing where it will go in the next few years. It's cool to see goals that are being standardized and accomplished.  I will utilize this information in my nursing practice by setting future education goals and making sure that I follow through with them.  I think that shadowing will help...
