Final Reflection
This semester, I learned a lot about leadership and feel much more comfortable going forward with my career in potential leadership positions. As a new graduate a few months ago, I felt like I knew the basics - starting IVs, changing dressings, passing meds, and inserting a foley catheter. At least, I felt like I was familiar with the processes, even if I wasn't perfect at the procedures. This past semester with leadership and feeling more comfortable in my role as a nurse in the hospital has helped me feel more comfortable and able to think outside of just performing my skills. It also has helped me understand more of the way things run and why things are the way they are in the hospital. It helps me put my feet in the shoes of my employers more, but also helps me think about what I would do if I am ever in a leadership position.
I enjoyed the team activities over the semester. I felt like my teammates all had very different ideas but also some similar ideas. I think it is interesting to watch all of our different personalities and types of nurses work together or discuss things. It made way for lots of new ideas and I really enjoyed learning from them.
I will use all this information in my nursing practice by implementing what I have learned in place, starting now. For example, I want to be helpful to other new nurses who are nervous to ask questions. Sometimes as a new nurse, I have felt some nurse bullying or just feeling stupid because I forgot something during the shift and end up making the next nurse a little annoyed. I also want to be good about being professional, especially if I am in a leadership position. I am a person who wants people to like me if I am a leader, but I need to remember that my responsibilities as a leader are more important than being popular or liked. I also think it makes people respect me more if I am not overly relaxed about certain things, etc.
I really liked this class and what I was able to take away from it. I felt like it was useful. I think I have good leadership potential, but it was good to have a class to help guide ways on how to develop that and what to avoid. I enjoyed the discussions as well as watching movies about leadership and skills. I think it's a very useful class, especially for all nurses to take. I think I would have felt so uncomfortable ever being a charge nurse if I hadn't taken a leadership course.
