Reflection Journal Week 5
From this unit, I learned a great deal about leadership and performance appraisal. I learned a lot about methods of performance evaluations and the reasoning behind them. I enjoyed the group activities that provided the opportunity to discuss what we would do with employees that aren't being good team leaders, particularly when they are in leadership positions. I was interested because I felt very sympathetic towards the nurse in this situation - she had lost her husband and was a single mom of multiple children. My teammates helped me think about different solutions, such as the need to pick up extra mandatory shifts on the floor to be able to work charge nurse shifts. I think working with employees is important.
In the team activities, I learned a lot in the different ways to approach employee performance appraisal questions. I realized there are many ways that can be done. Some can provide more ability of the employer to interpret. Others are more specific, based on the job.
I plan on utilizing this information in my nursing practice by learning to work with circumstances of people, while still holding expectations for employees to keep. I also plan on keeping performance appraisal interview questions so I can self evaluate and think on how I can actively improve/be an example.
I feel like the performance appraisal questions and interviews help employers know their employees goals better, but also helps employees better understand their own goals too. I also think that it helps with self-evaluation and self-improvement, as well as self discovery.
