Hiring Interview

I learned a great deal in this interview about hiring.  I talked with a person named Erika who worked on the hiring committee in a Student Records and Registration system at Brigham Young University - Idaho.  I learned a lot about what the thought processes are for employers when interviewing others. It made me think a lot about the importance of experience in the job.  Erika mentioned that having appropriate experience with her job and a good understanding of what qualities would help with a successful candidate helped them be better prepared and qualified for interviewing.  When I asked her about the most difficult thing for the interview process, she said that using your judgment to determine the best candidate and picking the right person can be difficult.  It made me think that it requires a lot of confidence in yourself and your abilities. Typically, they would narrow their pool of candidates down to 4-5 people.  I think this is good because it helps use time best.  It also helps one filter out who would be best fit for the job, etc. When interviewing, they would use standard questions to ask candidates. She explained that she usually hires 1:1.  I think group interviews are good to find people who are interested, but when it comes to narrowing down, I think individual interviews are better in order to get to know an individual and put more pressure on to see how they work.  She also told me that the qualities they looked for in candidates were usually people who were familiar with technology, learned quickly, paid attention to detail, and weren’t afraid to ask questions, as well as having good customer service skills.  They would also look for specific answers, but would also see how candidates did under pressure at times.  I think it’s good for both, and one subconsciously checks for how one does under pressure regardless.  She said for this position that they value problem solving more.  I think that this helps with trusting that coworker.  Finding the answer to something is super important and having the confidence to ask to find that answer.  Finally, she said in interviews that she likes to help them feel more comfortable so that they show more of their true selves.  I have seen both of these in interviews.  I think it’s good to help them feel at ease, while still maintaining a professional environment and interview.
