Reflective Journal Week 2
1. From this unit, I learned a lot about basic leadership. I learned lots about different characteristics of leaders and what makes someone a good leader, as well as what doesn't make someone a good leader. It was interesting to see and explore different tactics through watching Ender's Game and viewing the slides for class. I thought the Leadership Characteristics assignment was interesting as well because it made me think about these certain roles in relation to nursing.
2. From the team activities, I mostly agreed with the certain people we established as leaders. I felt like most of them were already considered leaders in unique senses. Reading what other people had to say about Martin Luther King Jr. as a leader reminded me of the significance he made in history and why he made such a great leader. It's impressive to look back upon the leaders of the past whom we remember today.
3. In my nursing practice, I will utilize this information by remembering effective traits of good leaders. I can also look for leadership opportunities as they come. I think that something good to do is to watch leaders and their interactions with me. I can ask myself what are things they do that make me want to follow them or not follow them. I also can observe the characteristics which I have learned about and try to apply them accordingly.
4. My personal feelings on the materials covered this week feel a greater sense of understanding leadership. I feel like I can relate to a lot of what I have learned about. I've had both good and poor leaders in the past. Looking back, sometimes in the past, I've noticed that some of my poorer leaders often made me feel bad about things instead of helping me. When I've been in leadership roles, because of those experiences, I've tried to make things clear and explain them to people so that they don't feel stupid.
